Carrots are easy to grow from seed and thrive when directly shown in the garden. Since they dislike being transplanted due to their fragile roots, starting from seed is key for a successful carrot crop. Follow these tips to enjoy a bountiful carrot harvest.
Prepare Soil
Garden: Carrots prefer loose, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil by incorporating compost and sheep pellets for nutrients and avoid soil compaction to allow carrots to grow straight.
Pots: If growing carrots in containers, use Oderings Fruit & Veggie Mix, which provides the ideal texture and nutrients.
Feed
Garden: Carrots are generally low-maintenance feeders. Adding compost and a balanced organic fertiliser before sowing is usually sufficient.
Pots: Mix a slow-release fertiliser into the soil when planting container-grown carrots.
Watering & Mulching
- Regular watering is essential, especially in hot weather. Water deeply to avoid stunted growth and split roots.
- Keep soil moist but not soggy; mulching helps retain moisture and cool the soil during hot spells.
Protection
- Thin seedlings to prevent overcrowding, which can lead to deformed carrots.
- Avoid disturbing the soil around the roots, as this can impact their growth.
Harvest
- Most carrot varieties are ready for harvest in 70–100 days, depending on the type. Check for bulging tops to determine maturity, or gently brush away soil to inspect the size.
- Harvest when the soil is moist to avoid breaking the carrots; watering the night before makes it easier to pull them up without damaging them.
Storage
- After harvest, brush off excess soil and trim greens to about 2–3 cm to preserve flavour.
- Store in the fridge or a cool, dry place, such as a garage, where they can last for 4–6 months. Check periodically and remove any signs of rot.
Garden Expert Tip:
Carrots grow best when direct-sown and should be spaced 40 cm apart for easy harvesting and healthy growth. Avoid transplanting to prevent root disturbance.
