Planting Lilies
Planting In the Garden
Soil: Plant lilies in well-drained soil, ensuring it is not too rich.
Depth: Dig a hole and plant the bulbs 100mm below the soil surface.
Spacing: Plant in groups of 3-5 bulbs for a great display.
Planting Time: Lilies can be planted from May to September, but they should be planted immediately after purchase to prevent them from drying out.
Fertilisation: Incorporate blood & bone and a good-quality potting mix into the soil when planting.
Longevity: Lilies should be left in the same spot for 4-5 years before splitting to allow the bulb to grow larger and produce more flowers.
Planting In Pots and Planters
Pot Size: Ensure the pot is at least 20cm deep for proper root development.
Soil: Use a good-quality potting mix.
Fertilisation: Incorporate a slow-release fertiliser like Oderings Total Replenish twice a year.
Watering: Water lilies 2-3 times a week or when the soil feels dry.
Caring for Lilies
Cutting Flowers: When cutting lilies for floral arrangements, always leave at least one-third of the stem to ensure the bulb keeps growing.
Post-Flowering Care: Let the stem and leaves die down naturally after flowering. Once the leaves turn yellow and then brown, cut the stem off at ground level.
No Animal Manure: Avoid using animal manure around lilies, as it can harm them.
Replanting: In winter, dig up the bulbs and replant them immediately, as they should not be stored dry.
Following these steps, you’ll enjoy vibrant, fragrant lilies in your garden or patio for many years.
