Types of Lawns
Easy Care Lawn
As the name suggests, easy-care lawns require minimal maintenance and are perfect for high-traffic areas, such as playgrounds or family yards. The grass is thicker and harder wearing, making it ideal for heavy use. If you want a low-maintenance option with durability, the Oderings Hard Wearing seed is a great choice.
Lifestyle Lawn
Lifestyle lawns are a step up from easy care, offering a quality blend of seed that is low maintenance but still requires occasional attention. With a mid-thickness blade, this lawn is great for homeowners who want something more refined than a tough, heavy-duty lawn but don't want the hassle of constant care. For patching up an existing lawn or creating a new one, the Oderings Special Blend seed is your go-to.
Retirement Lawn
If you have time to nurture your lawn and take pride in its appearance, a retirement lawn might be the one for you. These lawns feature super fine grass blades that require regular mowing, de-thatching, and sometimes weed control. While maintenance is higher, the result is a luxurious lawn that feels soft and looks immaculate. For the ultimate lawn experience, choose Superfine Grass Seed.
Lawn Preparation
To ensure your grass grows well, it’s crucial to prepare the soil properly:
- Timing: For the best results, sow grass seed in spring or autumn when temperatures are mild.
- Weed Control: Spray and kill weeds and unwanted grasses before planting.
- Soil Cultivation: Loosen the soil to a 5–8 cm depth, removing any debris.
- Soil Enrichment: Apply Oderings Lawn Replenish at 10g per square metre to improve soil quality.
- Firm Seed Bed: Create a firm, level seedbed, lightly rake the surface, and then heel in the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
Sowing the Seed
Sowing Rate: Spread seed evenly at 30g per square metre. For even coverage, divide the seed into two portions:
- First, sow half of the seed in a north-to-south direction.
- Then, sow the remaining seed in an east-to-west direction.
- Covering the Seed: After sowing, lightly rake the surface to cover the seed.
Watering Your Lawn
- Initial Watering: Keep the seed moist by watering twice daily with a fine mist until the grass is fully established. This is crucial to prevent the seeds from drying out and to promote germination.
Mowing and Maintenance
- First Mowing: Once the grass reaches 5–6 cm (2–3 inches), mow lightly, ensuring no more than 1/3 of the grass height is removed each time.
- Regular Mowing: After mowing 3–4 times, apply a light dose of Oderings Lawn Replenish to encourage lush growth. Continue regular mowing to maintain your lawn’s appearance.
- Feeding: Once the lawn is established, feed it twice a year—once in spring and once in autumn. You can apply a third feed in early summer to encourage growth if needed.
You can create a lawn that suits your needs and thrives throughout the year by selecting the right grass seed and following proper preparation, sowing, and maintenance techniques. Whether you prefer a low-maintenance lawn or a showpiece garden, the right grass seed will help you achieve the perfect lawn for your lifestyle.
