Also known as the NZ Cranberry, this perennial is a compact, evergreen shrub producing small, glossy dark green leaves with new growth tinged red. Masses of white flowers followed by fruit are produced in February to March. The Chilean Guava serves as an excellent edible alternative to the English box hedge, offering the convenience of easy clipping for a low formal style hedge or container growth. Its fragrant white-pink-tinged bell-shaped flowers make it an attractive choice for patio adornment or placement near windows. Fruit typically ripens from late summer to early autumn, accompanied by small dark green leaves that exhibit red-tinged new growth.
Thriving in partial shade or full sun, Chilean Guava is frost hardy and tolerant of salty maritime air, preferring sheltered sites for optimal growth. Regular pruning, especially after fruiting or for a box hedge aesthetic, helps prevent it from becoming straggly. It flourishes in fertile, well-drained, loamy soil, although it can adapt to sandy and clay soils with proper care. Mulching during summer and ensuring ample moisture contribute to its healthy growth.
