Dicksonia squarrosa, a resilient tree fern, is notable for its ability to tolerate some full sun (though not strong afternoon sun during warmer months), drier soils, and light winds. It can also endure moderate frosts. This fern has a distinctive black trunk and a flatter crown with shorter leaf fronds, making it suitable for smaller gardens. Native to New Zealand, Dicksonia squarrosa is found in lowland and hill forests across the country, including Stewart Island, Chatham Island, and Three Kings Islands, at elevations up to around 800 meters. This evergreen fern thrives in various conditions and adds a unique touch to any garden.
