Foodscaping with Pots & Planters

Creating a meal from the garden to the table can be a proud moment, but with the ever-decreasing size of residential sections, we need to think outside the box to continue the kiwi tradition of growing our own.

Foodscaping
What is foodscaping? It's the idea of creating an edible landscape in your garden space instead of just growing vegetables in the traditional veggie garden. By incorporating pots and planters into your space, you can pack them full of vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and companion plants, creating an edible landscape.
A benefit to growing your own edibles, means you control what insecticides you use (if any), reduce waste in your fridge, share food with friends and neighbours, and reduce your plastic waste.

30 - 50 Day Edibles
If you're a first-time gardener, this list is for you, as these plants are quick-producing and require minimal work. You can also try mixing and matching these plants into an Elho Basics 38cm Bowl.

Lettuce

Lettuce Gourmet Oak is ideal for picking and coming again. You don't need to allow this lettuce to heart up. Three plants per bowl.

PakChoi / Bol Choy

Foodscaping, with Pots & Planters

Pak Choi/Bok Choy is a fast-growing vegetable with an interesting mild flavour in stir-fries. Harvest the entire plant for your meals. This plant is upright, so you can fit five plants per bowl.

Baby Beans

Baby beans are just little, but you will be able to get a few handfuls each week when they are at their peak. Pick when young and keep the plants out of the wind. Three to five plants per bowl.

Spring Onions

Foodscaping, with Pots & Planters

Spring onions can be planted from seed or transferred from seedling punnets into a pot. Another vegetable you can plant en masse and harvest when required. Use 20 plants per bowl.

Baby Spinach

Foodscaping, with Pots & Planters

Baby spinach has dark green leaves with a fast growth habit. Pick early and often to minimise the plant going into seed. Baby spinach plants will grow 15cm and don't mind cramming into a pot. Full sun is required. Three plants per bowl.

Radishes

Foodscaping, with Pots & Planters

Radishes can be grown from seed, and plant a lot. Radishes can also be planted in between longer-term veggies such as brassicas. Sow seeds thinly at 1.5 cm deep. 20 seeds per bowl.

Herbs

Herbs are ideal to add to your bowls or to mix and match with any of the above. Plant three to five per bowl and harvest regularly.

Growing Tips:

Soil
Do not use soil from your garden or straight compost from your home compost bin. Purchase a container mix containing the right blend of ingredients to get the most out of your vegetables. Oderings shrub & tub or Oderings Fruit & Veggie Mix are ideal.

Feeding
The soil you purchase is packed full of fertiliser. However, when growing in pots, the nutrients are used quickly compared to ground planting. You can supplement feed with Yates’ liquid fertiliser range.

Watering & Hydration
Make sure you're watering regularly and have a hose on standby. If your pots are not watered well, soil can become hydrophobic, so mulch is an excellent investment to lock the water in. Hydrated plants also minimise pests and help the fruit to swell! Besgrow Coir Mulchis great on top of the soil to retain hydration.
