Sprouting is one of the quickest and simplest ways to grow healthy food at home. Whether you're growing them for salads, sandwiches, or stir-fries, sprouts are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. They grow in just a few days and require minimal space and effort.
How to Grow Sprouts
One of the easiest methods to grow sprouts is in a jar, and here's a simple step-by-step guide:
What You’ll Need
- Cheesecloth
- Rubber band
- Sprout seeds
- Preserving jar
- Storage container or food storage bag
- Paper towel
How to Grow
Step 1: Rinse 1–2 tablespoons of sprout seeds and place them in a clean, sterilised jar. Do not fill the jar more than a quarter of its capacity, as the seeds will expand as they sprout.
Step 2: Cover the seeds with warm water (about 5 cm) and secure the cheesecloth with the rubber band. Let it sit overnight.
Step 3: Drain the water and rinse the seeds the next morning. Tip the jar upside down, place it at a slight angle, and let it drain fully. Store the jar out of direct sunlight in a warm, well-ventilated area. Rest the jar against a wall or place it in a bowl to collect draining water.
Step 4: Repeat the rinsing and draining process at least twice daily for 3–7 days, depending on the sprout variety and your desired size.
Step 5: Once your sprouts reach the desired size, rinse them and store them in the fridge.
Harvesting
- Once harvested, rinse the sprouts one last time and drain thoroughly.
- Store your sprouts in a covered bowl or storage container in the fridge for up to a week. A paper towel in the container can help absorb any excess moisture.
Sprouts are incredibly easy to grow and offer fresh, nutritious, and vibrant meal ingredients. They require minimal space and effort, making them perfect for beginners or anyone looking to add a health boost to their diet. With just a little care and attention, you can enjoy a continuous harvest of these superfoods all year round.
