Maximise your garden’s potential with family tree planting! This innovative technique lets you grow multiple fruit varieties in one hole, offering a compact, productive orchard. It saves space and extends your harvest season, allowing you to enjoy a variety of fresh, homegrown fruit over a longer period. By planting 3 to 5 varieties together, you’ll create a thriving, space-efficient mini-orchard that’s easy to maintain. Learn how to make the most of your garden space and enjoy the rewards of a diverse, abundant harvest with these simple, expert-approved steps!

How to Create a Family Tree Planting:

Select Varieties

Choose 3 to 5 varieties of the same fruit type (e.g., peaches, nectarines, apples). Ensure the trees have similar growth habits, as some varieties, like peaches and nectarines, can be combined due to their similar structure.

Prune the Trees

Prune each tree to encourage growth on one side, with branches starting around the same height. While it may seem like the trees will be unbalanced, the roots will grow together, creating a solid foundation.

Dig a Large Hole

Dimensions: 1m wide and 40-50cm deep. The hole needs to accommodate several trees' root systems, so ensure its wide enough.

Arrange the Trees

Plant the trees in a circle, spacing them 30cm apart at the trunk, with branches facing outward. This positioning allows the trees to grow together without crowding or competing for space.

Backfill the Hole

Replace the soil in the hole, pressing it down to eliminate air pockets, but avoid compacting it. If the soil quality is poor, mix in compost to enrich it.

Final Pruning

Check for branches that cross over or grow into each other, and prune them for balanced growth.

Tips for Success

  • Avoid Dwarf Varieties: Dwarf trees have weaker root systems, so choosing standard-sized varieties is better.
  • Same Rootstock: Ensure all trees are on the same rootstock. This ensures the roots grow together and the trees have similar vigour.
  • Pollination: Choose varieties that are either self-fertile or that will cross-pollinate with each other to ensure good fruit production.
