Crocus

Banner Image
Who could resist the charm of crocuses? These spectacular little bulbs are among the first to bloom in winter and early spring, heralding the arrival of warmer days with their vibrant colours and petite stature. Despite their delicate appearance, crocuses are hardy survivors, thriving even in the harshest conditions, including snow. Whether planted in the garden or pots, they are easy to grow and bring a cheerful touch to any space. Discover how to cultivate these gems and enjoy a stunning display that brightens the dullest winter days.

Crocuses are perfect for gardens and pots, offering early-season colour in shades of blue, white, cream, and yellow. Easy to grow and resilient, they thrive in semi-shaded spots or cool areas, adding a joyful burst to your outdoor or indoor spaces.

Position

Crocuses thrive in cool, semi-shaded spots, such as under trees or other sheltered areas.

Prepare Soil

Garden: Ensure soil is well-drained and work in dried bone flour or bulb fertiliser before planting.

Pots: Use a bulb-specific potting mix or a standard mix enhanced with dried bone flour.

Planting Tips

  • Plant corms between February and May.
  • Place them 5–8 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart in gardens for ample growth.
  • In pots, arrange corms close together for a fuller display, covering them lightly with soil.

Feed

Garden: Apply bulb fertiliser or dried bone flour during planting and throughout the growing season to encourage strong plants and multiplying corms.

Pots: Supplement with liquid fertiliser during the active growing season.

Watering & Mulching

  • Water lightly after planting to settle the soil and provide moisture. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Mulching isn’t usually necessary, but a light layer can help retain moisture in drier climates.

Protection

While crocuses are hardy, protect them from overwatering and heavy trampling. In snowy areas, their natural resilience ensures they thrive without added cover.

Garden Expert Tip

For a truly spectacular display, plant crocuses en masse or in clusters. They’ll create bold, colourful statements that light up any garden or patio, making the wait for spring days feel a little shorter.
