Daisies

Growing Daisies
Daisies are more than just a beautiful addition to any garden—they symbolise innocence, purity, and new beginnings. Their cheerful blooms bring vibrant colours that brighten not only your garden or pots but also your day. Whether you’re planting them to enhance your space or gifting them to a friend, daisies are a timeless favourite. Discover how to grow and care for these hardy perennials and enjoy their charm throughout the seasons.

Daisies are hardy, long-flowering perennials that thrive in full sun. Their simplicity and vibrant colours make them perfect for gardens, pots, and thoughtful gifts to brighten someone’s day.

Position

Plant daisies in full sun where they can grow undisturbed for years.

Prepare Soil

Garden: Enrich existing soil with plenty of compost to ensure it is nutrient-rich and well-draining before planting.

Pots: Use a premium potting mix with good drainage and a slow-release fertiliser for healthy growth.

Feed

Garden: Apply general garden fertiliser three times a year: in spring, summer, and after autumn flowering.

Pots: Use a long term fertiliser in spring and again in early autumn. Total Replenish or Triabon is ideal.

Watering & Mulching

  • Water regularly during summer to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering, as daisies prefer well-drained conditions.
  • Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Protection

Daisies are resistant to most insects and diseases, requiring minimal protection. Ensure plants are not waterlogged, as this may lead to root rot.

Pruning

  • Trim plants by one-fifth after each flowering to encourage compact growth and another flush of blooms.
  • In February, cut plants back by one-third to a half. Avoid hard pruning after February to prevent new growth from being damaged by winter cold.

Varieties to Try

  • Argyranthemum ‘Sassy’ Series: Compact and ideal for pots or borders, available in delightful shades like pink and white.
  • Osteospermum: Perfect for summer gardens, rockeries, or containers, with long-lasting flowers in pink, purple, white, and yellow.
  • Felicia (Kingfisher Daisy): A spreading evergreen shrub with pink, white, or blue flowers and bright yellow centres, flowering from late spring to autumn.
  • Federation Daisies: Renowned for their vibrant colours and resistance to weather extremes, these low-maintenance daisies bloom in pink, white, and yellow.

Garden Expert Tip

For maximum impact, plant daisies in clusters of three or five. This creates a lush, full effect that highlights their vibrant blooms and adds an eye-catching feature to your garden.
