Whether gracing your garden or filling your home with their signature scent, these elegant flowers are a true delight. With simple care techniques and the right planting conditions, freesias will reward you season after season.

Freesias are known for their exquisite perfume, strong stems, and stunning blooms. Perfect for pots or garden beds, they’re a must-have for any flower enthusiast.

Position

Plant freesias in a sunny spot with well-draining soil to ensure vibrant growth and flowering.

Prepare Soil

Garden: Use a bulb potting mix or enrich the soil with compost. Add a bulb fertiliser for optimal results.

Pots: Choose a premium potting mix, such as ‘Oderings Potting Mix,’ and incorporate bulb fertiliser when planting.

Planting Tips

  • Plant corms 7 cm apart, with the bottom of the corm 7 cm deep.
  • When adding fertiliser, dig a 10 cm hole, place a teaspoon of fertiliser at the bottom, cover with 3 cm of soil, then position the corm and backfill with more soil.

Feed

  • Freesias require minimal fertiliser beyond the initial planting.
  • Add fertiliser toward the end of the flowering season to replenish the bulbs for next year.

Watering & Mulching

  • Water thoroughly after planting and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
  • Mulch lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Protection

  • Freesias are generally hardy but may need protection from excessive moisture, which can cause rot.
  • Ensure pots and garden beds have excellent drainage.

Flowers

Freesias provide three flowering stems per plant, each with six to eight buds. Pick flowers as they bloom, changing the water regularly to extend their vase life. Freesias are a stunning addition indoors, adding colour and fragrance to any room. Their long-lasting blooms make them a favourite for floral arrangements. Just remember to change the water regularly to keep them fresh.

Post-Flowering Care

  • Allow foliage to die down naturally to store energy in the corm for next season.
  • Once the foliage has completely flopped, either leave the bulbs in the soil or lift and store them in a dry, shaded space like a garage.

Garden Expert Tip

For continuous blooms, plant freesias in intervals from February to May. This ensures a longer flowering season and a steady supply of vibrant, fragrant flowers.

With their unparalleled fragrance and vibrant colours, freesias bring joy to any garden or home. Start planting today and enjoy their timeless beauty season after season.
