Bring a splash of summer brilliance to your outdoor spaces with sunflowers. Whether you choose towering giants or charming compact varieties, these blooms promise beauty and delight all season.
Choose a Sunny Spot
Select a location that receives full sun for at least 6–8 hours a day. Sunflowers thrive in sunny conditions.
Prepare the Soil
Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Add compost or organic matter to improve soil quality. Sunflowers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5).
Plant the Seeds
- Sow seeds directly into the soil once the danger of frost has passed.
- Plant seeds about 2.5 cm deep and 15–30 cm apart, depending on the variety. For larger varieties, leave more space.
Water Regularly
Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply to encourage strong root growth, especially during dry spells.
Support Tall Varieties
As sunflowers grow taller, use stakes or garden ties to support them, especially in windy areas.
Fertilise Sparingly
Use a balanced fertiliser if needed, but avoid over-fertilising, as it can lead to weaker stems and fewer blooms.
Monitor for Pests
Check for common pests like aphids or birds eating seeds. Use organic methods like Neem oil or netting to protect your plants.
Harvesting & Storing Sunflower Seeds
When to Harvest: Wait until the green disk at the back of the flower turns yellow.
Protecting Seeds: Use netting to keep birds away as seeds mature.
Removing Seeds: Rub two flower heads together or use your palm to loosen them.
Storage: Store in a breathable cotton bag in a well-ventilated area. Avoid airtight containers, which can cause mould.
Roasting Sunflower Seeds
- Spread a single layer of kernels in a shallow dish.
- Roast in a 180°C oven for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Optional: Add 1 teaspoon of melted margarine per cup of seeds and stir to coat.
- Salt to taste and store in a tightly covered container.
Staggered Planting for Continuous Blooms
To enjoy sunflowers all summer long, plant in intervals. This ensures a steady supply of blooms to brighten your garden or home.
