Why Summer Pruning Works

Summer pruning reduces a tree's size and vigour by removing branches with leaves. When you remove leaves, you limit the tree's ability to photosynthesise, reducing new growth. This decreases the energy stored in the roots, leading to less vigorous growth in the following season. Summer pruning is especially effective on deciduous fruit trees, including espaliered varieties, where it can help maintain the shape and structure of your tree.

Key Benefits of Summer Pruning

Manageable Size: By pruning regularly in summer, you can keep your fruit trees small and within easy reach for harvesting. This makes it easier to manage, spray for pests, and protect from diseases.

More Trees in Smaller Spaces: Smaller trees mean you can fit more trees in your garden, allowing you to enjoy a variety of fruit.

Reduced Risk of Infection: Pruning in summer reduces the risk of bacterial and fungal infections, which are more common with winter pruning in cold, wet conditions.

Enjoyable Experience: Summer pruning is more comfortable than winter pruning, making it more likely that you’ll get it done!

Three Simple Steps to Summer Pruning

Years 1 & 2 (First and second summers after planting)

  • After the spring growth spurt, cut back new growth by half to maintain control over size.
  • In late summer, cut half of the subsequent growth back by half.

Year 3 and Beyond

  • Choose the maximum height you want for your tree and stop it from growing any taller.
  • Trim or remove vigorous shoots above the desired height to maintain your tree's shape.

Other Pruning Tips

  • The ‘Three D’s’: Always remove dead, diseased, and damaged branches to keep your tree healthy.
  • Shape your tree: For stone fruits, prune to an open vase shape; aim for a central leader shape for pip fruits.
  • Don’t be afraid to prune: There is no perfect way to prune a tree. Each tree is unique, and pruning is a skill that improves with practice.
  • Use Quality Tools: Ensure you’re using good-quality secateurs and saws. To prevent disease, always seal cuts with a product like Bacseal or Seal & Heal.

Summer pruning is the ideal method for managing fruit trees in small spaces. It helps keep trees manageable, improves fruit yield, and is easier to carry out in warm weather. With the right techniques, your fruit trees will thrive year-round.
