What is Neem?
Neem is available in two forms: liquid spray and granules. Both forms effectively control insects on the plant and soil, promoting healthier plants. I prefer using the granules as they’re easier to handle.
Neem’s Benefits for Your Garden
Neem works wonders on a variety of pests and insects, including:
- Root Mealy Bugs
- Root Nematodes
- Grass Grub
- Carrot Flies
- Gall
- Black Aphids (on cabbages)
- Caterpillar Damage (on cabbages)
- White Fly (on tomatoes)
The best part is that neem won’t harm worms or other beneficial soil life, making it a safe option for all your plants.
How to Use Neem Granules
In Containers
When planting, sprinkle a tablespoon (adjust based on container size) of Neem granules into the potting mix. For existing pots, sprinkle the granules on top of the soil and cover them with a thin layer to prevent mould. In containers, Neem is effective for 4-6 months. In the garden, apply every 1-3 months, reapplying every 6 weeks during the growing season.
For Lawns
Neem is fantastic for controlling grass grub. After mowing, sprinkle 50-100 grams of granules per square meter, focusing on areas where damage has occurred. Water the granules in well.
When Planting or Sowing Seeds
Work the granules into the top 10cm of soil around the plants you want to protect. Reapply every 6-8 weeks while the plants are maturing.
