Monstera plants are a popular addition to indoor spaces and are known for their stunning foliage. While they’re often seen growing horizontally, they thrive when grown vertically. In their natural environment, Monsteras climb rainforest trees, using their aerial roots to spread out and receive optimal light and air circulation. By mimicking this growth habit at home, you can encourage your Monstera to grow larger, healthier leaves and create a striking indoor feature.
Why Vertical Growth?
Growing vertically helps your Monstera spread its leaves evenly, saves space, and ensures better light exposure. Vertical growth allows the plant to reach its natural potential, leading to healthier, more vibrant foliage. Plus, it can turn into a beautiful living piece of decor.
How to Tame Your Monstera - Tools You'll Need:
- Coir Houseplant Pole—Made from 100% natural coir wrapped around a PVC pipe, this pole is ideal for supporting your Monstera’s vertical growth and allows for easy watering through the hollow centre.
- Velcro Plant Tape—This is a reusable, gentle method of securing your Monstera to the pole. It’s cost-effective and easy to use.
Step 1: Re-pot the Plant for Vertical Growth
If your Monstera is growing horizontally, the first step is to re-pot it. Place the plant so the stem is positioned vertically, as shown in the image. Insert the coir pole into the soil next to the Monstera’s leading stem. Twist the pole clockwise into the soil to create a strong and stable placement. Make sure the pole is secure and upright to support the plant.
Step 2: Guide the Stem
Gently arrange the Monstera’s leading stem around the pole. Be careful not to damage the plant as you move it into position. Support the stem’s natural shape while guiding it along the coir pole, helping it climb upwards.
Step 3: Secure the Stem with Velcro Tape
Cut small strips of Velcro Plant Tape or use Velcro Ties to secure the Monstera’s stem to the pole. Attach the tape around the stem and pole to keep the plant in place. You can adjust and add more strips as the plant grows, keeping it aligned with the pole.
Design Tip:
When positioning your Monstera on the coir pole, it’s important to regularly check the plant’s placement. As it grows, you may need to adjust the Velcro tape and guide the plant along the pole to keep it straight and stable. This process not only helps your Monstera grow well but also creates a stunning indoor feature.
By supporting your Monstera with a coir pole and Velcro tape, you can help it reach its full potential and enjoy its impressive, large leaves. Happy gardening.
